Hi Lance. Great Job today. You can maybe on saturday still reach the second place of the podium, when you should be strong in the last Mountain and the Schlecks have a bad day but it is also really good, if you keep the 3rd place, I mean for such an "old hare" as you called yourself once before. :)Congratulations also for getting the new sponsor. Cool. Good that you will be independent from Astana and suspicious Winokourov. Maybe Contador helped yesterday the Schlecks cause he intends to be in their Team next year, wants to make friend with them? It sounded a bit so what was said in Eurosport during todays TT, but only Rumour? hearsay? I wish you all and also Contador that you can bring this Tour to an peacefull, successfull and professional end with youboth on the Podium, Alberto and you. It was not disrespectfull against you, what he has said today in Interview on Eurosport. I was relieved cause it sounded not hatefull but only professional. That is ok.

That is very cool. And great riding (for an old guy ;) in the tour. Just playing on your own words, of course.

My 7-year-old son was recently diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1) and I have found livestrong.com and the daily plate carb lookups critical. Especially love the BlackBerry app.

Have you thought of having some focused areas on the site, say, for diabetes? Or have I just missed them?

+3 down up

by tmana on July 23, 2009 at 11:04 AM

Not to be a complete spoilsport, but your son may also want to look up Team Type 1 (http://www.teamtype1.org) they're an Americas-based UCI team with pro and elite squads. You may also want to hook up with diabetes-specific online communities such as TuDiabetes (http://www.tudiabetes.com) and Diabetic Rockstar (http://www.diabeticrockstar.com). Diabetic Rockstar has a related under-18 community, YoungStars, which would be great for your son!

The Daily Plate is great for meal logging (though I wish it had add-on modules to integrate heath stats such as blood glucose and blood pressure levels along with food intake). The Gold membership makes the app available from your cellphone when you're on the road -- totally worth it.

Trek isn't going to stop providing bikes to LiveStrong. No Way, No How. That'd be silly.

My first knee-jerk thought was "great. Now we'll be able to buy LiveStrong cellphones, and they'll throw in a free LiveStrong Madone! (With 600 year cell contract) [Avail. in 39cm only]

Not the partners I'd speculated, I'll need some time to absorb this.
Regardless, I assume we'll be able to pick-up team spiffs at the stores - that alone is worthwhile! :-)

Congrats, Lance! I only wish it were "Team LiveStrong" instead of "Team Radioshack"...

I love you, Lance, and greatly admire your 7 Tour wins and your comeback. But RadioShack? Come on... They are nothing but third-rate hucksters trying to pawn off crummy electronics that break inside of 3 months. The swindle and lie to you just to make a sale. Glad you won't have to be paying for those batteries they try to sell you every time you walk through the door - they probably wouldn't last through one stage!

Why would Lance want Contador? Sure the guy is incredible on the bike but he has shown that he is not a team player. If the team had decided they could have simply stopped working for him and then he would have had nothing. Seems to me that he still has much to learn about teamwork. Maybe one day. I mean when Lance started out he was mush the same. He seems to have changed and is now more understanding and compassionate.

So who else is on this team? Is Johan coming aboard? We know AC won't be welcome...

"Exciting announcement"? You hardly sound excited.."

If you had just ridden at close to 100% for 40 km, never mind riding for the past 3 weeks, you probably wouldn't sound really excited either.

"Interesting Partner"? Radio Shack? Eh. But if they pay the bills and leave you alone most of the time, will be ok, I guess."

And your point is?

"So who else is on this team? Is Johan coming aboard? We know AC won't be welcome..."

I think AC has shown that there is no room for any other stars on any team he is involved with. He's a great champion, but I don't see him as a team player. I would certainly hope he will not be on the Radio Shack team.

And the team has respected Bruyneel, and the riders on the team? When Bruyneel signed on the dotted line, part of the deal was that he would not have to sign Vino. First, Vino has a press conference saying he will be on the team and that if Bruyneel doesn't like it, it will be up to him to leave. Now the Kazaks are telling Bruyneel Vino will be on the team.

No, I'd say the timing of the announcement is perfect.

by kidscientist on July 23, 2009 at 10:22 AM

I think it would be tough for them to have Team Livestrong, as it would imply that Livestrong sponsors the team. That doesn't sit well in the cancer community, as I'm sure we all saw when Lance announced that he was looking into other sponsors when Astana wasn't paying their bills. The cancer community thought he meant Livestrong and they were up in arms that money raised for cancer was going to fund a cycling team. Just my thoughts. I'm still hoping for a black/gold kit though. I just can see why maybe they don't want to put Livestrong in the team name.

RadioShack is a great choice, most US residents have heard of it and see their stores. Nike and/or Trek would be cool, but RadioShack gets the LiveStrong message out to more people. Tech companies sponsoring cycling teams is getting common: T-Mobile, HTC, Garmin, etc.

Congratulations on a great tour so far Lance, you have given us excitment and thrills, but for us cancer survivors you have given much more. You've shown what cancer taught you and how used it in a positive way and you bring that strength and determination to each ride you take part in. Thanks for that also. You are the reason I started doing sprint triathlons at age 52!
I hope this will be a great new team, maybe they will let you use the name Livestrong in there too, fingers crossed on that one! I hope that Johan comes with this new team also as he is a great guy. I know you can recruit some great riders for this and have an even better team than Astana without Contador, he is not a team player.
No matter where you finish on the podium or off, we are so proud of you and so encourged by what you do. To the chap from Scotland, I'm a Glaswegian who's lived in Texas for 38 years, but if Lance comes to Scotland I might have to make a special trip home for that! My husband and brother climbed Ben Lomond and of course most of the rest of the family loves to do hill walking and hiking. At least you've got some hills to walk!! Great work on the fund raising for cancer!
Enjoy the rest of the tour Lance and I know your family will be excited to see you again! Keep thrilling us every day of the ride, my husband and I are going to have separation anxiety when the Tour is over!!

Contador. Yes, a great rider, also one that really screwed the team for his own gain. By dropping Kloden yesterday and gapping Lance, he blew what would have been the Astana 'virtual podium' after today's ITT and could even jeopardize Lance's 3rd place in Paris. I hope there's a spot for Kloden on the RadioShack team as he's been a real team player. Contador, get a job.

Contador doesn't belong on Radioshack for many reasons. Forget all the selfish, immature stunts he's pulled on this Tour. He belongs on a team where he can be the Diva he wants to be. He might have a problem, however, when he realizes that part of his "talent" was having the strategic guidance (whether he always took it personally or not)and the talented, dedicated team support that has enabled him to enjoy the success he's found on this year's Tour.

Party of the beauty of forming a new team is the opportunity to start from scratch to build a synergystic, championship organization.

Maybe also german Sponsors could also support you and your foundation. you have so many fans here. It must be possible. Maybe it's also a good way to re"lance" their products in fe Belgium :-)

Take care Lance and good luck in the days to come. Top 3 in Paris please.

I still have the same yellow arm band that I got 4 yrs ago for inspiration during a very difficult pregnancy. I have not taken it off-it was on during labour even. wait is Astana folding or what? I'm glad that you got a strong sponsor but team Radio Shack doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Maybe you could add another sponsor and be like something-radio shack. Verizon-Radio Shack? Texaco-Radio Shack? Actually Radio Shack-Texaco could work. Go for a gasoline company.

In any case i'm looking forward to Mont Ventoux since there's no alp duez this year. Hopefully you can find the legs to win the big one! Since i know soooo much about cycling, i'd say you should try and stay on alberto's wheel while he covers attacks by andy and frank, and hope he lets you get the stage win. It was sad he couldn't get one for andreas today. Oh well. It would have been just like in '03, with two teams with 2 riders each in the lead group, trying to get the lesser GC guy the win, but in the end the yellow jersey has to step up and win one for the team. Epic stuff. I love the tour.

This is great news, you started with Motorola and now Radio Shack. My only question is how do you obtain your Pro Tour license? I thought there were a set number of license's available. Wouldnt a team need to fold or have a license revoked(Astana) to get one?

Whatever I wish you luck and hope you can secure the riders needed to be successful. It is understandable that Johan would refuse to continue with Astana after he was promised he would not be forced to take Vino back. Is he really on board with you?

It doesnt matter you have shown yourself a true champion by putting the team before your own goals. It is something that Contador needs to learn, that move yesterday was stupid

Lance,
My father died from a tumor hidden behind his heart when I was 4 years old. He was in the Air Force stationed in Veitnam when he came in contact with agent orange! Cancer soon followed & took his life & I'm sorry to say that I can't remember him! When I was a kid I did bike a'thons for MS and cancer! Going door to door asking for 5 - 10 cents a mile & surprisingly I got 20 - 40 cents a mile! I sure these people thought I would go maybe go 20 - 30 miles and be done! I went 75 miles in 6 hours! The people freaked! I'm saying this because I've been a big fan watching you from the start even before your cancer! Watching you fight through all comers including all the doping alligations! I became a true fan when you made your foundation to fight cancer! Made me a true Man love fan! This coming from a football player! The Bike is my second! Because of you there is more hope for those kids who have dads with cancer! More than when I did! You don't have to win every year Lance! You just need to be apart of this sport and you will bring great things to it and the fight against cancer! Your drive is honorable to us all who have been affected by cancer! And I love watching you ride cause your like my daughter! Resilient! Live strong Lance! We look up to you! At least I do!

Regarding Colors: Based on Lance's training/competing wardrobe this year, I can only assume that there will be a GREAT deal of black in the new Kit. If not Black and Gold of Livestrong then perhaps the Black and White of Johnny's. Regarding Hincapie: After Team Columbia HTC's Agony of Defeat in Stage 14's-Besan? and today's Thrill of Victory Stage 19-Aubens and subsequent Team Lovefest exhibited in George and Cav's interviews I don't think even Lance can pull George away from Team Columbia now.

Awesome news about the new team, really hope you're bringing Johann & TREK/Nike along with you? As for team riders of course you would want Big George if he is still riding, Levi, Klodi, Horner, Popo, Rast, Thor and maybe seeing as you are rumoured to be looking down under you could take a look at Ralstoun he rode a good tour & supported his team & Thor very well in my opinion. Mind you maybe i'm likely biast being a kiwi too, but I admire how he like you has also fought back from a health scare. Just my two cents worth for what it's worth.

Good luck with the new team & thanks for making Le Tour such an exciting event this year!

Can't wait to see you & the new team light it up next year.

LIVESTRONG my Friend.

Impressive climb by Lance on Ventoux!!! Made the tour just as exciting before his temporary departure from racing. Looking forward to Team Radio Shack, and I still hope George Hincapie will be on the team!

you're my hero Lance...great showing this year. you know what you're doing to finish this TdF, but to get yourself on the podium after such a long break is truly inspiring -- almost as inspiring as what you're doing for people everywhere!

thanks, and good luck with the new team too...i'll look forward to updates, and especially the TdF next year!

Lance,

You were awesome on Ventoux. Followed your career since 1999. After you retired, hoped for a comeback and what a comeback in this year's tour. Can't wait for the new team Radio Shack updates and training news. Like to see Big George and Popo riding with you again. You made this year's Tour exciting--fire in your eyes and the LIVESTRONG spirit in your heart.

Best wishes for the future of the new team and for your ongoing fight for a cure for cancer.

Lance,

Our daughter is quadraplegic and blind from an injury in 1989. She asked me to send this message from her: "Ride On Lance, for all of us who can't. Congratulations on the new team and for your performance in this year's tour. I am a poet and I'm sending this one for you from one survivor to another."

IF I COULD
by Laura Chagnon

If I could only see the sky,
it would fill every song of a dream.

If I could only see the sun,
God's eye peering from behind a cloud,
that would be enough for me.

If I could only see the soul of trees,
brilliant in their color,
that would be my rainbow.

If I could only see the rain,
that would be okay,
I would feel God's compassion in a tear.

If I never heard the thunder,
that would be okay
because I can hear music in the rain.

If I never saw a sunrise,
that would be okay
since my heart is content,
for twilight is the color of my eyes.

What great news! Now we have something to really look forward to next year. Lance Armstrong is THE MAN! I hope in the next Tour de France you show AC just what it means to be a team mate. He has a lot to learn to be the great cyclist you are. I know you will choose your team mates carefully and I can't wait to see who they are! Go Lance and team Radio Shack!

Lance,

My daughter, wrote this poem for you before the tour started as we were all awaiting the first day of the tour. You have been an inspiration for me as the mother of a survivor, not of cancer, but of a traumatic head injury. Days when I watched in awe as she fought her way back, just as you described in your book, "It's Not About the Bike" of your comeback from cancer. My copy is "dog eared" from using it as a reference for courage. If I may, I'd like to post one more comment on behalf of my daughter who I mentioned in the previous comment, is quad. & blind. On this grand day as you stood on the podium once again, may I share this poem she wrote for you and all the cyclists who participated in this awesome race:

Yellow Jersey
by Laura Chagnon

July is the month to celebrate
For it brings the Tour de France,
And of course our most beloved cyclist
The brave and awesome Lance.

He has a hero's heart
Pumping with desire,
The passion running through his blood
Like a Texas wild fire.

He's faced many challenges
A legend of someone great,
His courage to be honored
Let there be no mistake.

His spirit filled with magic
As we watch this eagle soar,
High into the mountains
Blue skies and open doors.

The crowd is cheering as you ride
Such loyalty upon their faces,
It's not about who comes in first
But the integrity of the race.

The winner wears the yellow jersey
With honor and great pride,
Forever wings inside their heart
Dreaming of the ride.

I've been convinced for years the Radioshack in my town was a front for running drugs, so I was pretty shocked to see Radioshack named as the new team. I don't see the connection, and as a technologist, I haven't seen RS as a relevant player in technology for 10 years.

But when I thought about it more, most of the team sponsors are banks or other financial entities. I certainly would not be excited to root for team 'Capital One', or something like it. I spent the whole tour this year rooting for a team named after the capital of Kazakhstan, promoting (I think) their national bank. So the more I've thought about it, why not Radioshack? If they are on-board with promoting the LiveStrong message, and if perhaps this is a sign they are taking themselves a little more seriously, perhaps I'd even root for Radioshack itself to make a comeback. Afterall, my first computer was a TRS-80 bought at Radioshack, and playing with that helped launch my whole career in technology!

Good luck Lance, and to the new team. I will anxiously await seeing who will become part of it. Hopefully the first announcement will be about Bruyneel, and the second about Levi.

I am proud that RadioShack and Livestrong have joined forces to work for the team and to help promote the prevention and evenual cure of cancer.
I would say that it would benefit the team if you could possibly obtain the services of Johan Bruyneel to direct the team; and then get Kloeden and Levi to participate with you as well. I know you will be looking to put together the greatest group of riders you can.
Bless you all.

What you did in the tour will probably never be repeated and the athletism in golf is nothing like cycling. I hope you are succesfull this year with the new team and i also hope you kick Alberto's Butt.
