Dry skin is the most common cause of red itchy under-eye skin. Dry under-eye skin is most common when the climate changes and outside air gets cold, causing humidity levels to drop. Using heated air inside also can dry out sensitive skin, as can washing your face or bathing too often. Skin irritation from cosmetic products also can cause itchiness and irritation under the eyes.


You can treat red itchy under-eye skin by applying cold compresses to the area, according to the website MedlinePlus. Wash the skin with a mild soap to prevent irritation, then dry with a gentle patting motion instead of rubbing. Apply an under-eye cream after cleansing the face.


If humidity changes are the cause of itchy dry under-eye skin, use a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air, minimizing dryness of the skin. Change the water in your humidifier daily to prevent bacteria accumulation in the air. Drinking water also adds moisture to the skin; try to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily.


Some people think that using hot water can relieve itchy skin. But hot water can remove natural oils from the skin and cause dryness and irritation, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Limit baths and showers to five to 10 minutes, and use warm water. Close the bathroom door while showering to make the room more humid and lock moisture into the skin.


Avoid scratching the under-eye skin. This skin is thin and sensitive, and scratching can cause additional inflammation or scarring. If itchy under-eye skin isn’t improving or itchiness is interfering with sleep, contact your doctor to see if underlying health problems such as allergies are causing the issue.
