Emergen-C, a product line of dietary supplements, is widely available in many drugstores and supermarkets. Although the specific contents of an Emergen-C product vary, most Emergen-C products contain very large doses of vitamin C, vitamin B-12 and vitamin B-6. Because of this, most Emergen-C products are only safe for people over the age of 15 to consume. However, the brand does offer one kid-friendly product safe for children over the age of 2.

Tolerable Upper Intake Levels
The tolerable upper intake level is the amount of a certain vitamin or mineral you can take without being likely to experience adverse side effects. As you might expect, the tolerable upper intake level for children is typically much lower than it is for adults. Most of the Emergen-C products contain amounts of vitamins or minerals that exceed the tolerable upper intake levels for children. For example, many Emergen-C products contain 1,000 mg of vitamin C, but the tolerable upper intake levels of vitamin C for most children ranges from 400 mg to 1,200 mg. Children who consume more than the tolerable upper intake level of a certain vitamin or mineral may experience adverse and serious consequences.
Emergen-C Products for Adults
Most Emergen-C products are only suitable for adults. This includes all 11 flavors of the original formula, the Emergen-C Immune Plus product and the Emergen-C Splash beverages. It also includes all the products of the specialty formula product line, which includes the vitamin D and calcium, MSM, joint health, heart health and immune defense products. While the Emergen-C Multi-Vitamin Formula line does offer a kid-friendly product, the other products of this line are not suitable for kids.
Emergen-C Products for Kids
The only Emergen-C product safe for kids to consume is the Emergen-C Kidz Complete Multi-Vitamin drink mix, clearly labeled with the word “Kidz.” This drink mix provides 24 essential nutrients and 500 mg of vitamin C. It is available in two flavors: Strawnana Berry Blast and Orange Pineapple Explosion. Children between the ages of 2 and 3 should only consume one-half of the powder in a packet each day, and this powder should be mixed with 2 to 4 oz. of water. Children 4 and older can safely consume one packet daily with 4 to 6 oz. of water. Children who consume more than these amounts increase their risk of a vitamin overdose.
Always keep Emergen-C products out of the reach of children. If your child accidentally consumes an Emergen-C product that is not intended for kids or consumes multiple doses of the Kidz Emergen-C product, call a doctor immediately. Signs of a vitamin overdose may include rapid or irregular heartbeat, changes in urination, increased sensitivity to light, confusion, fainting, joint or muscle pain, weakness, headaches, changes in mental or emotional state, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, flushing of the skin and loss of appetite.
