A healthy diet consists of three servings of whole grains and popcorn qualifies as one of them. Making popcorn part of your plan will not only satisfy hunger pains but it can help reduce your risk of a stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and help lower your cholesterol.
Nutritional benefits
Popcorn is a whole grain that contains protein and fiber. Both are "filling" ingredients which help curb cravings, end hunger pains and help you make it to your next meal. Because popcorn has no artificial additives or preservatives, and is sugar-free, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) suggests it to be a suitable snack. Popcorn is also very low in calories. Some popcorn can have as little as 35 calories per serving - perfect for those trying to lose or maintain weight.
What kind of popcorn is best?
Air-popped corn is definitely the healthiest popcorn. Not only do butters, candy coatings, salt and the many different flavorings add calories, but they can also affect the body's function in terms of high blood pressure, sugar levels, cholesterol and weight. To add flavor, try different spices or ingredients like raisins or sunflower seeds. Keep it nutritious but make it delicious.
Does it matter what oil is used to cook it?
Try using olive oil, extra virgin olive oil or canola oil when cooking popcorn. These oils have fats that are easier for the body to break down. Olive oil is known to burn quickly so beware of your cook time and temperture. Another suggestion is coconut oil. Coconut oil has health benefits such as lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of cancer. It can also be cooked at high heats. While there is no such thing as a fat free oil, there are definately some better choices you could try.
How much can I eat?
As tempting as it is to eat the entire bag of popcorn, try sharing with others. In an office setting, pop the corn in a gathering spot such as the break room. The sweet scent of the corn will surely draw a crowd. If at home by yourself, separate servings into sandwich bags and save them for another day. Stick to the nutritional guidelines and only indulge in three servings of grains daily. Infinite amounts of popcorn can have undesirable effects.
Is it suitable for children?
Popcorn is not recommended for children under the age of 4 years due to the possibility of choking. Once they have passed that age feel free to offer this healthy snack to your kids. It also makes for great crafts. Try stringing the popcorn with a needle and thread to make Christmas or party decorations.
