The ingredients in generic albuterol, an aerosol or liquid bronchodilator, are albuterol sulfate, sodium chloride, sulfuric acid and an aqueous solution. Albuterol sulfate is the active ingredient used to treat uncontrolled asthma symptoms of airway constriction. The three inactive ingredients assist the medication in transportation to the blood stream through inhalation.

Albuterol sulfate is a salt mixture containing the chemical compound albuterol. Albuterol sulfate is a beta 2 adrenergic agonist, which means it is a drug used to treat asthma and pulmonary diseases. This beta 2-adrenergic agonist causes smooth muscle relaxation, and bronchial vasodilation in the lungs. Albuterol sulfate is its generic name in the United States, while it is known as salbutamol sulfate within the World Health Organization.

Sodium chloride is a powdery salt substance with a crystal shape. This residual compound dissolves in water and alcohol and is part of the transportation system in albuterol that allows for inhalation. It is commonly used in medication development as a safe and effective conveyor of chemical compounds. It has the ability to adapt to water or alcohol for ease of use in pill, capsule, liquid or inhalation form.

Sulfuric Acid

Sulfuric acid is another inactive ingredient in albuterol sulfate. It is a product made from sulfur, oxygen and water. When this chemical compound interacts with chemical metals and salts, it creates hydrogen flouride, or HF. Hydrogen flouride is a propellant that when mixed with albuterol and sodium chloride permit transportation of the active ingredient albuterol through the lungs and bloodstream.

Aqueous Solution

An aqueous solution is a water solution that conducts current. This additional inactive ingredient in albuterol sulfate allows for chemical adaptation of the sulfuric acid, sodium chloride and albuterol. This substance aids in establishing dosages of the medications in the various forms of pill, inhalant, steam inhalant or syrup. The aqueous solution can become more or less concentrated as well as allowing for additional cosmetic ingredients. Some manufacturers add flavoring to enhance albuterol's palatability for young asthma sufferers.
