Most coffee drinkers are aware of the high calorie content in many mochas or frappucinos. However, few think about the increased calories regular or iced coffee may get from drink add-ons. Regular brewed coffee does not contain any calories. If cream or sugar are added, though, the calories can start to add up fast. McDonald's offers iced coffee drinks with a flavor sweetener choice for the same price as a regular iced coffee. When the sweetener has been added, iced coffees may wind up with as many calories as a latte or mocha.

The calorie content of a McDonald's iced vanilla coffee varies depending on the size of the beverage and any additional ingredients, such as creamer or extra sugar. A small iced vanilla coffee with regular syrup contains 130 calories, at 8 fluid ounces. A medium iced vanilla coffee with regular syrup is 11.5 fl oz and contains 190 calories, while a large iced vanilla coffee has 270 calories.

If you choose the sugar-free vanilla syrup in place of the regular vanilla syrup, a small iced vanilla coffee contains 60 calories. A medium contains 90 calories, and a large has 120 calories.

Additional Calories

Although the vanilla flavoring sweetens the drink, some people add more sugar. Each McDonald's sugar packet contains 15 calories. Coffee creamer also adds additional calories. A 0.4 fl oz container of creamer adds 20 calories to a drink. Some individuals may add three or four creamers to a large drink, thus adding 60 to 80 calories to the coffee.

According to the McDonald's website, the ingredients in the sugar-free vanilla coffee syrup are water, erythritol, natural (plant source) and artificial flavors, cellulose gum, sucralose, salt, malic acid, potassium sorbate (preservative), acesulfame potassium and caramel color (with sulfites).

The regular vanilla coffee flavoring contains sugar, water, fructose, natural (plant source) and artificial flavor, caramel color (with sulfites), potassium sorbate (preservative), citric acid and malic acid.

McDonald's coffee creamer contains milk, cream, sodium phosphate, datem, sodium stearoyl lactylate, sodium citrate and carrageenan.

The light coffee creamer is made from milk, cream, sodium phosphate, datem, sodium stearoyl lactylate, sodium citrate and carrageenan.

Although the Food and Drug Administration has deemed acesulfame potassium and sucralose, ingredients in the sugar-free vanilla syrup, safe for consumption, many health professionals question the safety of artificial sweeteners. Critics of the sweeteners claim they may lead to health problems.

Other Beverage Options

McDonald's offers iced coffee with vanilla, caramel or hazelnut flavors. Customers may also order iced coffee without additional flavorings. McDonald's also serves cappuccinos, mochas, frappes and lattes.
