Artificial sweeteners such as Splenda have been popular in diet and so-called sugar-free foods for decades. Unfortunately, little is known about their long-term effects on health, and many experts believe their short-term effects could be as bad, if not worse, as sugar itself. The best line of defense in avoiding sugar and calories, and losing weight is to include more whole foods and fewer processed and refined foods in your diet. After an initial cleanse, during which you might feel some withdrawal symptoms, your health will be much improved in the aftermath of artificial sweeteners.
Choose a date to discontinue the use of Splenda "cold turkey." Keep in mind that you might feel some symptoms of withdrawal, such as headaches and irritability, so it is best to pick a time when your schedule is not as busy.
Add more whole foods to your diet, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, poultry, fish, nuts and legumes.
Have a high-protein breakfast of eggs, whole grains and fresh fruit to lessen your cravings for foods and drinks sweetened with Splenda.
Have a nutritious snack whenever you feel a craving for a Splenda-sweetened food or drink. A high-protein snack, such as a hard-boiled egg or a piece of fish, will make you feel more satiated and stop your cravings faster.
Drink plenty of water to flush your system. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces per day, and more if you exercise and/or drink alcohol or caffeinated drinks.
Get at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a day, which also helps flush toxins and Splenda residue from your system.
