Bass, catfish and crappie lurk under Lake Limestone's shimmering water, while motorboats and paddleboats glide above the surface. The lake is considered to have the best fishing of all Central Texas lakes, and provides a convenient getaway to those living in Austin, Houston and Dallas. Stay for days along the lake's shore at one of several campgrounds with facilities that range from primitive to luxurious.

Amenities on the Eastern Shore

Lake Limestone Campground and Marina lies midway along the lake's eastern shore. RVs can enjoy full hookups at 35 sites, including pull-through and back-in spaces. Tents have their own grassy area with some shade provided by surrounding trees. Put your boat on the water at the ramp, fish from the pier or buy a few supplies at the marina store. The campground also rents cabins and an efficiency apartment for those desiring a less rustic experience.

On the Running Branch

On Lake Limestone's western shore, Running Branch Marina hosts campsites for both tents and RVs. Tent spaces tuck away from the main camping circle and have electricity and water to each site as well as a barbecue grill. RV sites and cabins are found on the main camp circle, with volleyball, basketball, a playground and dump station within the circle. Most sites abut an access canal to the lake where you can put your canoe or kayak in the water right from camp. The marina has a boat ramp with fuel, fish cleaning area and supplies.

Over the Rainbow

On the lake's northern shore, Rainbow Ranch provides campsites catering to gay and lesbian travelers. RV campers have full and partial hookups available with seasonal and permanent sites available. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. The ranch provides flush toilets, hot indoor showers and cold outdoor showers for rinsing off. Take a dip in the pool or paddle one of the campground's complimentary canoes to explore the lake. Children are welcome, but the park requires documentation of their birth, legal parent or guardian's driver's license and paperwork showing temporary medical power of attorney.

Back to Nature

Three public use area provide lake access and primitive camping on sites ranging from 10 to 25 acres. The three sites each have a public boat launch, picnic areas and restrooms. Bring your own water, as there is none provided. Public use area No. 5 lies just east of the dam on the southern end of the lake, with camping limited to seven days. Site No. 2 on the eastern shore and Site No. 3 on the western shore have 14-day camping limits.
