If you enjoy helping others and are interested in working in the health and wellness industry, a nutrition business may be an ideal career for you. As people continue to embrace a holistic approach to health that includes diet, weight loss strategies and nutritional supplements, they often require the services of a professional who can help them to achieve their health goals. In order to build a successful nutrition business, you should know the basics of vitamins and minerals, the function of food in the body and have a clear idea of the type of services you will provide.

Step 1

Research your state’s requirements for education, training and licensing of a nutrition business. Consider getting advanced training in nutrition and determine what it will cost for you to commit to formal training. Decide whether you will work alone or as part of a group practice or network.

Step 2

Learn all you can about the nutrition business by investigating as many aspects of the business as possible. Decide whether you will emphasize product sales or provide counseling services. Seek employment in a retail establishment that sells nutritional products or services. Resolve to be a good employee while learning the ropes.

Step 3

Consider joining a distributor network that offers a turnkey opportunity that will enable you to start your nutrition business for a small investment. Many multi-level companies offer training and support services as a part of your distributor relationship.

Step 4

Research the possibilities of starting an online nutrition business. Interview website designers and network marketing specialists who can help you to design a functional website to attract potential customers. Plan to provide continuing education in the form of articles and newsletters or hire a freelance consultant to do it for you.

Step 5

Consult with an attorney and certified public accountant. Establish a relationship with a bank or financier to establish a source of funding if you do not have enough capital. Contact your local Small Business Administration office or the Chamber of Commerce and ask about the availability of free business courses if you do not have business experience.
