Blood vessels supplying the brain have a specialized lining that is not found in other areas of your body. This special lining is called the blood-brain barrier. The BBB controls how nutrients and other chemicals enter the brain by actively transporting them from the blood to the brain. Only a very small amount of chemicals, such as ammonia, can leak across the BBB.
