Thanks to the workout jumpsuit, getting ready for your gym session, yoga class or post-workout brunch has never been easier. And considering these stretchy onesies are both comfortable and cute, it's no shock they're all the rage. (Yes, the '80s workout wear trend is back in a big way.)

But workout bodysuits aren't just a fashion piece. They're functionally fit, too, eliminating a lot of the issues you may get with traditional workout gear. Think: Your bottoms don't shift and your top stays perfectly in place mid downward dog.

How We Chose

With the help of Melissa Garcia, DPT, CSCS, a California-based physical therapist and strength coach who's a big fan of workout jumpsuits, we hand-selected each of these products. We chose them based on criteria including:

  • Fabric
  • Fit and support
  • Ventilation

We make deliberate choices about the language we use when it comes to gender. While more brands now carry gender-neutral workout clothes, you’ll still typically see clothing brands market their products to men or women.

The main difference between most women's and men's clothing is the fit: Men's versions tend to be longer in length and roomier in the front due to physical differences. However, fabrics, quality and comfort should be the same between gender-labeled pairs. We encourage everyone to purchase the products that feel right for them.

1. Best for Pilates: Girlfriend Collective Cami Unitard

This Girlfriend Collective unitard is best for lower-impact exercise like Pilates, according to Garcia. The buttery fabric is smooth and comfortable and the seamless design helps prevent unwanted rubbing and irritation on your skin.

This one is also available in two different inseam lengths (28.5" and 23.75"), so both taller and shorter exercisers can find their perfect fit.

2. Best for Running: Lululemon SenseKnit Running One-PieceSenseKnit Running One-Piece

This compressive bodysuit is perfect for running. The high neck, sports bra top offers plenty of support, while the short-length bottom offers ventilation and helps prevent chafe, according to Garcia.

The zipper on the front also helps with easy on and off during even your sweatiest workouts. The nylon fabric is quick-drying and the front zip option offers a little extra air without compromising compression.

3. Best for Yoga: Nike Yoga Luxe Dri-FIT

Nike's jumpsuit is best suited for a yoga class, according to Garcia. The top has a built-in shelf bra for extra support and the snug fit allows for a distraction-free flow without feeling too restricted.

This matte yoga bodysuit is also made with Nike's Dri-FIT fabric, which wicks sweat away from your body and dries quickly. And the suit is made with shiny, satin seams for a cute bonus.

4. Best for Strength Training: Set Active Sportbody Shortysuit

With the 1-inch supportive straps and short-style bottoms, this jumpsuit is optimal for weightlifting, Garcia says. The fabric dries quick and the contoured fit means a distraction-free gym session.

5. Best for Cool Temps: Good Karma Long-Sleeve Onesie

Unlike most workout jumpsuits, this one has long sleeves, making it ideal for breezy outdoor hikes, jogs or yoga sessions. The legs are cropped at a 7/8 length for extra breathability and the back is open for some extra ventilation.

While the long sleeves are a great touch, the best part about this workout onesie is definitely the compressive waist band, Garcia says. It holds you in without feeling too tight and confining.

6. Best for Layering: Alo Yoga Goddess Rib Prime Time Halter Bodysuit

Stopping at your bikini line, this bodysuit is best for layering with your favorite gym shorts or sweatpants. But that means it's super versatile, too! You can toss it on for a gym session and just switch up your bottoms on the way to a post-workout lunch.

Another bonus: The high neck gives your chest plenty of coverage and it's easy to layer a sports bra under for extra support.

4 Factors to Consider When Shopping for Your Perfect Workout Bodysuit

1. Length

Like workout leggings, bodysuits come in all lengths, including full legging, 7/8 cut and biker short length. The best length for you is personal preference, but thinking about your favorite workout style can help, Garcia says.

Those who plan to use their workout jumpsuits for yoga or Pilates may prefer a full-length or 7/8 cut. But if you mostly stick to running or strength training, a shorter length can provide the ventilation you need while you sweat.

2. Adjustable Straps

The one downside to workout onesies is that everyone's proportions are different, while suits have set top and bottom lengths.

But suits with adjustable straps (like our Girlfriend Collective pick above) can help you get the perfect fit for your body. This is especially nice for people who have a very long or short torso, according to Garcia.

3. Fabric

As with all your other workout clothes, you want a comfortable and breathable fabric, Garcia says. Read the product details and look for a quick-drying or sweat-wicking fabric, like nylon, Lycra and polyester. These will keep your body cool and dry.

Avoid cotton during sweaty workouts, as this material absorbs moisture and takes a long time to dry.

4. Ventilation

Considering a workout bodysuit covers you from (almost) head to toe, think about how much ventilation you may need during your workout. A lot have either an open back or mesh panels to allow a little extra breathability. Depending on how sweaty you may get during your workouts, these are nice details to consider.
