Pimples, whiteheads, blackheads and associated blemishes emerge causing significant emotional distress for acne sufferers. Although this condition lacks a cure, there are preemptive steps you can take to hinder its development. In lieu of commercial products that contain irritating chemicals, using natural ingredients as part of a daily skin care regimen may reduce the appearance of acne. Although herbs are a popular alternative to over-the-counter beauty products, there still lacks sufficient evidence of its effect on acne-prone skin. Always consult a dermatologist before beginning a new skin care program.

Daily Acne Scrub

Step 1

Combine 10 drops of thyme oil with 2 tbsp. of organic dark brown sugar in a small saucer. Thyme oil retains antimicrobial properties, helpful in cleansing the skin and preventing breakouts associated with impurities, according to the Drug Information website. Additionally, thyme oil helps to moisturize the skin due to flaking or dryness because of acne. Nevertheless, there is little scientific evidence to support the effects of thyme oil on acne-prone skin. Dark brown sugar acts as a mild exfoliant to lift away dirt and bacteria that can clog pores. It also contains glycolic acid, which helps to remove dead skin cells that can accumulate on the surface causing acne, asserts the Oasis Advanced Wellness website.

Step 2

Apply to the face in upward, circular motions to encourage removal of surface debris.

Step 3

Rinse with warm water and pat the face dry. Use this cleanser at least once a day depending on your skin type. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing your face up to three times a day if you have oily acne-prone skin, and once a day if you have dry acne-prone skin.

Daily Acne Toner

Step 1

Mix 2 oz. of distilled water with 6 drops of thyme oil and 7 drops of lavender oil in a glass jar. Using distilled water ensures any trace impurities, commonly found in tap water, are obsolete. Thyme oil helps to moisturize the skin while offering antibacterial and antifungal properties that can cause unsightly blemishes. Likewise, lavender oil retains cleansing qualities that ward off dirt and bacteria instrumental in acne development, reports the Drug Information Website. Similar to thyme oil, there still lacks sufficient data regarding lavender’s direct influence on acne.

Step 2

Shake the jar to evenly distribute the oil as the water and oil naturally separate.

Step 3

Pour a small amount onto a cotton pad and apply evenly to the face and neck in an upward motion, avoiding the eyes and lips. Use this toner following your daily cleanser to prevent the appearance of acne.
