Puffiness, or bags, under the eyes is caused by a variety of factors including heredity, lack of sleep, stress, illness, crying, fluid retention and inflammation. To lessen the severity of puffiness, determine what is causing the puffiness, and then treat the cause. It is possible to minimize the bags under your eyes even if you are not able to determine the cause.

Step 1

Sleep for seven to eight hours per night with your head slightly elevated. Fluid may accumulate under your eyes while you sleep if you lay flat.

Step 2

Apply a cool compress to the area. A towel or washcloth soaked in cool water will do the trick. Do not use very cold or frozen compresses, as this can damage the sensitive skin under the eyes.

Step 3

Lower the sodium in your diet. Excess sodium leads to fluid retention, which contributes to bags under the eyes. Eat less than 1,500 mg of sodium daily -- the average American eats 3,436 mg daily.

Step 4

Stay out of hot and humid weather. Heat and humidity can contribute to under-eye puffiness.

Step 5

Apply tea bags that have been steeped and cooled to your eyes. Leave the bags on your eyes for five to 15 minutes. Rinse your skin with cool water after you take the tea bags off.
