Microdermabrasion is a skin treatment that involves buffing away the outer layer of skin to reveal healthier skin beneath. This treatment is often employed to get rid of redness, uneven skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles and mild acne scars. It can be performed in office or at-home, though a professional treatment will provide better results.

Step 1

Cleanse the skin using a calming gel or foam. This removes impurities, dirt, oil and makeup so the microdermabrasion treatment penetrates deeper into the skin and provides a more even result.

Step 2

Remove contact lenses and wear goggles. This will prevent crystals from flying into your eyes and causing damage during the procedure.

Step 3

Place the microdermabrasion wand against the skin. Filled with aluminum oxide crystals, this wand will remove the top layers of skin. An included suction device will remove the crystals and exfoliated skin cells to create a more clean workspace.

Step 4

Repeated treatments are required for optimum results. Between five and 12 sessions, in all, are required. Wait two to three weeks between treatment sessions so as to not unnecessarily irritate the skin.

Step 5

Follow aftercare instructions provided by your doctor closely. Cleanse the skin with a mild cleanser and use an oil-free lotion or moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated and to prevent unnecessary peeling. It's normal for the skin to look red or a bit rough a few days following treatment, though this should fade quickly.
