From splashing your face with cold water to using a mask made out of ingredients that belong in a cake, there is no shortage of tips and advice on how to get rid of enlarged pores. The truth of the matter is, the size of your pores is determined by your genes and there is nothing you can do to physically make them smaller. There are remedies, however, that help reduce the appearance of large pores, such as exfoliation and diet changes.

Eat a healthful, well-balanced diet full of fruit, vegetables and whole grains as well as foods that contain good-for-you fats like salmon and nuts. These foods feature omega-3 fatty acids that help keep your skin clear and beautiful.

Wash your face twice a day with a pore-refining cleanser intended for your skin type. Some of these cleansers may feature ground-up fruit pits or microbeads that gently clean your skin and reduce the appearance of large pores.

Exfoliate. Dirt and dead skin cells may cause your large skin pores to appear even larger. There are many exfoliation options to choose from including exfoliating masks and facial scrubs as well as chemical exfoliation and miniature electronic exfoliation brushes. Choose the exfoliation option that works best for your skin. If you have sensitive skin, exfoliate one to two days a week, otherwise exfoliate daily.

Use salicylic acid lotion or facial pads to treat pimples. Due to larger pores, you may be prone to more breakouts.

Use noncomedogenic, oil-free products on your skin including makeup, moisturizers, lotion and sunscreen. These products won't clog pores.

Use a silicone-based primer underneath your makeup to reduce the appearance of pores, suggests "Real Simple" magazine. The primer will fill in the "holes."

Blot shiny spots with blotting papers. Oil and shine may enhance the appearance of large pores.

Make an appointment with a dermatologist. She can discuss procedures such as chemical peels and prescription-strength medication that help unclog pores.
