The wide variety of vitamin brands can make selecting the right vitamin very challenging. Being barraged by colors, claims and scientific terminology can create a sense of fear and frustration. Comparing the many brands on drugstore shelves can actually be pretty straightforward when you consider some basic criteria and ask some good questions. Vitamins are a great support to your daily diet, so comparing, then choosing, the best option for you is a great step forward in your pursuit of health.

Step 1

Apply logic when considering a brand and comparing it to its counterparts. If the claims seem bloated and extraordinary, it is likely that they are hyped up and not scientifically validated. Don't expect pie-in-the-sky claims to produce those kind of results. As the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, says, "A substantial number of dietary supplement products analyzed may not contain the amounts of dietary ingredients that would be expected to be found based on their product labels."

Step 2

Take time to do some research about the brands in which you are interested. Visit their websites, call their customer service representatives and ask questions about their manufacturing processes, how they validate the quality and quantity of their vitamins, and if they have had any problems, including legal issues.

Step 3

Utilize consumer support websites that offer unbiased feedback and information about the most popular brands on the market. Websites such as, or offer reviews, customer feedback, risks, questions and other beneficial information to help you compare vitamin brands.

Step 4

Ask a professional doctor, naturopath or dietitian what he would recommend that you take. These professionals have access to journals, trials and tests that have been conducted on many of the brands out there. They will only use what is safe and effective, so use their experience and expertise to support your quest to compare vitamin brands.

Step 5

Try one brand that appears promising, and see how you feel. Personal experience is the best way to gauge a product's value. Try the product for awhile, and if you feel a better alternative exists, try that brand for awhile until you find the right product for you.
