The 78 g bar has 29 g protein and the 50 g bar has 20 g protein from sources including soy protein and whey protein, which comes from milk. The Iowa State University Extension Eat to Compete program states that the average person needs 0.4 g protein per pound of body weight per day and strength training athletes may need as much as 0.8 g. This means that a 200-lb. athlete who is in training for a strength competition may need as much as 146 g protein per day.
The 78 g Pure Protein bar has 29 g carbohydrates, no dietary fiber, 3 g sugar and 16 g sugar alcohols and the 50 g bar has 16 g carbohydrates, 1 g dietary fiber, 2 g sugar and 6 g sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols such as the maltitol in these bars are carbohydrates that provide a sweet taste without abruptly increasing blood sugar levels the way sugar does. As the label warns, having too many sugar alcohols can have a laxative effect.
Vitamins and Minerals
The bars are high in many vitamins and essential minerals. The 50 g bar has 25 percent and the 78 g bar has 40 to 45 percent of the daily value for zinc, copper, iodine, vitamins A, C and E and each of the B vitamins including biotin. It has 10 percent of the daily value for calcium and phosphorus and 50 of the daily value for iron. The 50 g bar has 20 percent of the daily value for calcium and 8 percent of the daily value for iron.
Calories and Fat
The 78 g Pure Protein bar has 290 calories and the 50 g bar has 200 calories. Both bars have sucralose, which is a sweetener that does not provide calories. The 78 g bar has 9 g total fat and 6 g saturated fat, which raises LDL cholesterol in the blood. It has no trans fat, which is the other type of fat that increases LDL cholesterol. The 50 g bar has 6 g total fat and 3 g saturated fat or 12 percent of the daily value.
