Amstel Light is a variety of beer brewed in the Netherlands. Much maligned for its detrimental effects to the body, alcohol actually does come with good points. Moderate alcohol consumption may reduce your risk of developing heart disease, dying from a heart attack and it may possibly reduce your risk of strokes, according to Amstel Light might fit into your diet plan.

Video of the Day

Calories are always an issue when it comes to alcoholic beverages. Drinks that are syrupy and high in sweetness -- for example, pina coladas -- tend to also have high caloric values. A 12-oz. bottle of Amstel Light contains only 95 calories. However, if you eat a meal that contains 350 calories and drink two Amstel Lights, you just gave yourself almost 200 additional calories. Make sure to track liquid calories --they count the same as food.

People who are watching their carbohydrate intake consume low-carb foods and beverages to get their body into a state of ketosis. This takes place when you burn stored fat for energy instead of carbs. Amstel Light contains only 5 g of carbs per 12-oz. serving. In similar fashion to the calories, this amount will go up if you drink multiple beers in a night. Make sure to keep track if you are following a carb-restricted diet.

The alcohol content in Amstel Light contributes to the total calories. Carbs and protein, for example, contain 4 calories per gram and fat contains 9. Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram. A 12-oz. serving of Amstel has nearly 10 g of alcohol which would contribute 70 calories of the total amount.

Low Protein

Not only is Amstel Light low in carbs, but it is also low in protein. It only contains 1 g per 12-oz. serving. Protein is a macronutrient that the body needs for cell, muscle, organ and tissue repair.

Sodium Intake

Sodium is an electrolyte mineral used by the body for muscle contractions and blood volume regulation. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is affected by sodium intake. People trying to control hypertension often are advised to decrease sodium, increase potassium, watch their calories and maintain a reasonable weight. Amstel Light only contains 5 mg of sodium per 12 oz. The recommended range of total daily sodium is 1,500 to 2,300 mg. Remember that excessive alcohol consumption can also have a negative effect on blood pressure.

Fat Content

Saturated fat and trans fat can contribute to elevating cholesterol levels. If you consume high amounts, you run the risk of developing arterial plaque which can cause a heart attack. Amstel Light is free of fat and cholesterol.
