In order to have a greater chance of dieting success, it is recommended to lose only 1 to 2 lbs. per week, according to the University of Maryland. Therefore, it will take you approximately 2 to 4 months to lose 15 lbs.

The University of Maryland notes that 3,500 calories equals 1 lb. of body weight. In order to lose 1 to 2 lbs. per week, you will need to reduce your caloric intake by 500 to 1,000 calories per day. The most effective method of eliminating calories is through a combination of diet and exercise.
