Foods to Eat to Break Down Fat

When you are trying to reduce fat from the body, which foods to eat and which to avoid are a common concern. There are some foods that can be eaten which, when combined with regular exercise, will increase the rate at which fat is eliminated from the body.

Eating fruits that are high in vitamin C and/or pectin are helpful in burning fat. Vitamin C will help in releasing fat from the body and also dilutes fat cells, leaving them less potent. Pectin prevents cells from absorbing fats and promotes their ability to absorb water, which can help flush fat from the system. Grapefruit is the best choice, as it contains both vitamin C and pectin. Lemons, limes, oranges, guava and tangerines are other excellent sources of vitamin C. Apples and berries are high in pectin.

Protein Foods

Eating foods that are high in protein take longer to break down during digestion, leaving the body feeling more satisfied for a longer period of time. Beans, which are high in protein and low fat, are a good choice because of their high levels of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is what cleans toxins out of the body and binds with the fatty acids, helping to lose and regulate weight. Eggs are also a good protein food as they contain vitamin B12, a supplement which breaks down fat cells. If cholesterol is a concern, remove the yolk and eat only the egg whites.

Recent studies, performed at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Purdue University, have found that dairy products are effective in burning fat and losing weight more quickly. Professor Zemel, from the University of Tennessee reported in the Obesity Research magazine that, "If you compare a dairy-rich versus a dairy-poor diet you can nearly double the rate of weight and fat loss with the same level of calorie restriction." This is good news for dairy lovers. Choose products that are low-or non-fat for the best results.
