A group of researchers from Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital are currently developing cocoa-extract capsules. Why? In the name of health, of course.
Dark chocolate has been celebrated for helping lower blood pressure and increasing arterial dilation, which could promote heart health.
Chocolate also contains caffeine: The darker the chocolate, the more caffeine it contains. And caffeine can help combat age-related memory impairments, reports ScienceDaily.
But despite its numerous benefits, chocolate does contain sugar and fat, which could lead to weight gain if eaten in excess.
The good news: It’s the cocoa flavanols in chocolate, not the candy itself, that brim with heart-healthy benefits. And the Boston researchers have managed to create a capsule that contains the powerful cocoa compounds minus chocolate’s calories and fat.
“We’ll be rigorously testing whether the cocoa flavanols do reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, cognitive decline and many other conditions over time,” says Dr. JoAnn Manson.
Eager to try it? Don’t run out the door just yet. While it will be years before the product is fully tested, approved and sold at your nearest grocery store, researchers hope the capsules could offer a game-changing holistic approach to cardiovascular health, reports Food & Wine.
If you can’t wait years for the heart-healthy “chocolate” pills to be stocked on shelves, go ahead and reach for a little bit of dark chocolate! But just remember to enjoy it in moderation.
