Papaya is the fruit of a tropical tree that grows in parts of Asia and Central America. It’s also known as custard apple, pawpaw, fruta bomba, lechosa and melon tree; its botanical name is Carica papaya.

Video of the Day

One cup of cubed papaya contains 90 calories, has no fat or cholesterol, and virtually no sodium, according to WolframAlpha.

That same cup of papaya cubes contains a whopping 237 percent of your daily requirement of vitamin C and 50 percent of the vitamin A you need each day, reports WolframAlpha. The USDA adds that it’s also a rich source of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, beta carotene, lycopene and vitamin K.

Papaya has been shown to have digestive benefits, and may help heal stomach ulcers. Research published in the December 2009 edition of the “Journal of Medicinal Food” indicated that papaya enzymes had healing benefits in animal subjects with stomach ulcers.
