Rice is a common side dish at the dinner table. It has more than 15 vitamins and minerals and is a rich source of carbohydrates and amino acids. Although most types of rice have starch, short-grain rice is the starchiest. You can remove extra starch to reduce carbohydrate content for a healthier meal by parboiling the rice during the cooking process.

Pour into a pot 4 cups of water for every cup of rice that you are boiling. Bring the rice to a boil.

Continue to boil for five minutes. The water should have a cloudy-white color from the excess starch. Remove the pot from the heat and stir the rice thoroughly. Pour the rice through a colander to drain.

Rinse the rice with cold tap water. Put the rice back in a pot on the stove and continue to cook it as desired.
