Fruits and vegetables are known for their powerful antioxidant qualities and healthful properties that help reduce risk for obesity, cancer, diabetes and other conditions. However, these nutrition powerhouses can come along with pesticides and bacteria like salmonella. A produce wash will help remove these undesirable contaminants from your fruits and vegetables. One powerful ingredient in a good wash is grapefruit seed oil. It’s a natural cleanser that can zap pesticides. The oil also is a disinfectant with powerful antibacterial properties.

Step 1

Purchase the ingredients. Grapefruit seed oil is available at local health food stores. Baking soda and distilled white vinegar are readily available at the supermarket.

Step 2

Combine 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract with 1 tbsp. baking soda, 1 cup white vinegar and 1 cup water. Mix well, and then transfer the mixture to a spray bottle with a pump.

Step 3

Spray your fruits and vegetables. Let them sit between 5 to 10 minutes. Fruits and vegetables can be contaminated by pesticides as well as animal waste. This waste can contaminate the water used to hydrate crops, come from wild animals or the manure used on crops. It can contain pathogens such as E. coli, salmonella and campylobacter.

Step 4

Rinse the produce thoroughly to finish removing unwanted bacteria and pesticides. This also restores the item’s flavor. Vinegar helps kill the bacteria on fruits and vegetables, but you don't want to taste it.
