One glass of juice per day will not prevent you from losing weight, but a serious orange juice habit just might. Weight loss occurs when you consume fewer calories than you burn. Orange juice contains calories and if you do not burn those calories, it could cause the scale to stall.

You must create a 3,500 calorie deficit to lose 1 pound of weight. You could do this by exercising to burn more calories, eating fewer calories or combining both strategies. If you create a 500-calorie deficit every day, you can lose 1 pound in a week.

Significance of Orange Juice

One 8-ounce glass of orange juice contains 110 calories. If you drink several glasses of orange juice per day, you could be consuming 400 to 500 calories in juice alone -- which is less satiating than whole food. Cut out that juice and it may be enough to prompt weight loss -- provided you do not replace it with other calorie-containing drinks or foods.


A glass of orange juice is equal to 1 cup of whole fruit and offers vitamin C, folate and potassium. Orange juice is convenient, especially if you need to eat breakfast on the go, and fortified varieties can offer calcium and even omega-3 fatty acids. If you drink just one glass daily and account for it as part of your overall calorie intake, it should not cause you to gain weight.


If you swap your orange juice for a whole orange, you save 50 calories and gain 3 grams of fiber. A whole orange may also be more satisfying because it requires chewing and takes longer to eat. You still get plenty of vitamin C, folate and potassium in the whole fruit as well.
