Cooking in a slow cooker is simple, efficient and does not heat up the kitchen. A whole chicken can be cooked in the matter of a few hours. One chicken can be used to make several different meals and homemade broth. With a few steps, a chicken in a slow cooker can taste just like one cooked in an oven.

Step 1

Plug in slow cooker and set to low. Spread 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil in the bottom of the slow cooker.

Step 2

Break off four 2 inch wide pieces of aluminum foil. Form each into a golf-ball sized ball and place in the bottom of the slow cooker in the shape of a rectangle.

Step 3

Unwrap the chicken. Wash it with water and pat the skin dry with a paper towel. Remove the bag of innards from the cavity.

Step 4

Chop the onion half into four pieces. Insert the garlic cloves, onion and rosemary into the cavity.

Step 5

Place the chicken in the slow cooker breast-side up. By resting the chicken on top of the aluminum balls, the chicken will cook more like it is in a roasting pan in the oven.

Step 6

Rub 1-2 tablespoons of oil onto the chicken. The oil on the skin helps to make the skin crispy like an oven-roasted chicken. Sprinkle salt, pepper and dried sage to taste onto the skin.

Step 7

Place the lid on the slow cooker. Cook the chicken on low for 6 to 8 hours. Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and serve.
