Hamburger buns or rolls make a hamburger more convenient to pick up and eat, but they also add calories. If you are going to eat a hamburger bun with your next burger, know the calorie count ahead of time to make a better decision on your burger choice.

Video of the Day

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, or USDA, a regular plain hamburger roll has 120 calories. A mixed-grain or multigrain bun has 113 calories, and a reduced-calorie bun has 84 calories.

Calories From Fat

Each gram of fat has nine calories, according to MedlinePlus. A plain hamburger roll has almost 2 g of fat for almost 17 calories from fat. The mixed-grain bun has almost 3 g of fat for more than 23 calories from fat, and the reduced-calorie hamburger bun has less than 1 g of fat for almost 8 calories from fat.

Calories From Carbohydrates

A single gram of carbohydrates has four calories. As expected, a regular hamburger bun has a relatively high 21 g of carbs for more than 85 calories from carbohydrates. The mixed-grain bun has more than 19 g of carbohydrates for almost 77 calories from carbs; the reduced-calorie bun has more than 18 g of carbohydrates, giving it more than 72 calories.

If you’re ordering a hamburger bun from a restaurant, it’s important to ask how they prepare the bun. Some restaurants coat the bun with oil or butter and then grill or fry it; this will, of course, add calories to the bun.
