Foods to Increase the Alkalinity of the Blood

Proponents of the alkaline diet claim that the body’s overall pH level can be significantly modified by adjusting your intake of certain foods. Many of the foods that are considered universally healthy are also prime components of the alkaline diet, including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and Asian-cuisine foods such as seaweed. For best results, talk to your doctor about the optimal diet for your particular dietary needs.

According to the Wolfe Clinic website, a variety of vegetables are highly alkaline foods including: asparagus, beets, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cucumbers, eggplants, mushrooms, onions, peppers, pumpkin, rutabaga and sprouts. Dark leafy greens such as chard, kale and mustard greens are also considered highly alkaline. For best results, moderate your intake of foods high in sugar and fat by replacing certain diet items with portions of vegetables.


Fruits are a common component of the alkaline diet, and certain fruits, such as bananas, figs, oranges and watermelons, are considered highly alkaline. The Connective Tissue Disorder site recommends all types of fruits for health enthusiasts looking to neutralize their acidity levels, but notes that cranberries, prunes and plums actually produce acidic reactions in the blood. Dried fruits, such as dates and raisins, also make good alkaline additions to your diet.

Other Foods

A number of miscellaneous nuts, oils, beverages and nightshade vegetables can round out the alkaline components of your diet. Almonds, Brazil nuts and chestnuts make good alkaline snacks for during the day, while large-curd cottage cheese, cream and butter offer alkaline meal ingredients for desserts. Black olives preserved in oil, avocados and polenta are also alkalizing foods.


Although many of the foods emphasized by the alkaline diet are also considered important components of a healthy diet, some people may find themselves lacking in certain vitamins and minerals if they switch to an entirely alkaline diet. According to the Interstitial Cystitis Help website, although it is possible to alter the body’s pH for certain periods of time by consuming large qualities of alkaline food, no clinical trials support using the alkaline diet as a treatment for some diseases. Talk to your doctor before eliminating any important foods from your diet.
